A single phonecall can change everything.

In 2022 Suffolk farmers John and Edna Gooderham had their world turned upside down after a fire tore through their farmhouse, destroying their home and livelihood. They ended up living in a container on the farm whilst continuing to tend to their livestock. Sadly, Edna became sick with pneumonia due to the damp.

On top of everything, the family were then faced with the devastating news that the insurer would only meet 56% of the claim due to underinsurance.

They felt like giving up – until a fateful phonecall with FCN. North Suffolk pig farmer and FCN volunteer Peter Havers stepped in to provide vital support.

“I gave John and Edna time, effort, love and encouragement,” Peter says.

John said: “I can’t explain how much [Peter’s] done for me.”

Following a recommendation, Peter subsequently put the family in touch with Luke Broadley at Longfields Insurance, who stepped in to support the family. Acting on John’s behalf, Luke took over communications and negotiations with the existing insurer and broker, working closely with the family throughout the process, finally securing them the full payment they deserved.

Today they are living in a static caravan on their farm, surrounded by community, care and hope.

This short film is a powerful reminder of the importance of being there for others and the vital role charities play in supporting our farming community.
