We are humbled to see East Yorkshire farmer Denys Fell running the Sydney Marathon last month in support of FCN – after undergoing treatment for prostate cancer last year.
In November 2024 FCN told Denys’s story as part of our #NipItInTheBud campaign with Macmillan Cancer Support. In June 2024 at the age of 73 he went for a routine blood test. After the medical team noticed an elevated prostate-specific antigen level (PSA) in his blood, Denys was referred for additional tests. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer days later.
Denys had surgery in September 2024 and was declared cancer free in November 2024.
In a video recorded at the time, Denys urged the farming community to prioritise its health, saying: “It’s important to get seen within good time. Please, please get yourself checked”: “Please, please get checked” East Yorkshire farmer’s message after routine blood test discovered prostate cancer – Farming Community Network
At the time we wrote that Denys was looking forward to his next marathon. It is inspiring to see that he has recently completed the Sydney Marathon.
On his JustGiving page, he wrote: “I’m so pleased that, through this race, I also have the opportunity to raise a pound or two for FCN, a much-needed charity at the moment. I value your support. Thank you!”
We are grateful to Denys for supporting the work of our charities and for continuing to raise awareness of the importance of early detection of cancer.
