During the Royal Welsh Show (21st July) FCN and Macmillan Cancer Support held a reception event where our National Manager (Wales) Linda Jones discussed some of the successes and progress so far from the Rural Communities Cancer Project. This includes:
- 10,500 items of literature distributed as part of the #NipItinTheBud campaign, including posters, flyers and booklets – providing important information on cancer, signs and symptoms, and support available
- Over 2,100 migrant and seasonal workers engaged with across agriculture
- More than 100 presentations delivered, including to Young Farmers’ Clubs, veterinary practices and agronomy firms
- Multiple cancer stories shared from across our farming and rural communities, highlighting both the unique challenges faced and the hard work of healthcare professionals
- A significant number of stakeholders engaged with across the UK, prompting a long overdue conversation around cancer in our sector and encouraging a collaborative approach to change
We are championing a long-overdue conversation, helping to reduce barriers and give a voice to those in our community who are impacted by cancer.
Thank you to Helen Ley from Macmillan Cancer Support for speaking at this event and for highlighting the importance of this partnership. Helen said: “We’ve made a dent, but the barriers are still there. Stigma still silences too many, and too many people still think they have to face cancer alone. We’re here to say: you don’t.”
There is work still to be done, but by working together and collaborating across the sector, we can achieve great things that make a meaningful difference to people living with cancer.
Many thanks to NFU Cymru / NFU Mutual for hosting this reception and to the many stakeholders from across farming and rural communities who were in attendance.
