Dispelling 6 myths around contacting a charity helpline

It can be daunting to ring a helpline for the first time and for some people this can become a blocker to seeking support. There are many reasons why someone might be hesitant to contact a charity. But FCN has a track record of helping people to explore their options and find a way forward – each year we help thousands of farmers and farming families with a wide variety of issues. You can read a number of testimonials on our website from people we have helped.

Below we have outlined six of the barriers people might encounter when considering getting in touch with a charity – and have dispelled a few myths.

“Calling a helpline is a sign of weakness“

We all need a bit of help at times and seeking it out is a strength, not a weakness. Whether it be chatting with friends or family, or calling FCN, the most important thing is to take that first step.

“I don’t want my private business known in the local area“

This is very understandable, we know how closely connected the farming community is. We treat all calls in strict confidence and can refer you to a volunteer in another county if you prefer.

“You won’t understand“

Our helpline volunteers and staff are farming people. We are very much part of the rural community and understand the challenges that people face. We don’t judge and have often supported people experiencing similar things.

“You can’t actually do anything to help me“

You might be surprised! Whilst we can’t change people’s circumstances, we can often help shed new light on a knotty problem, help you think about options, and clear the fog of stress that can complicate our thinking. Our volunteers have considerable life experience and we can usually connect you with someone that has an understanding of what you are dealing with.

“It’s embarrassing“

We do understand that calling a helpline can be difficult, but our volunteers are friendly, farming people. They will give you the time you need whatever you are facing.

“I don’t know how to start the conversation“

Don’t worry, we’ll help you get started. If you prefer, you can start by emailing us in confidence and we will get back to you.
